His phone rings, that sharp, soul splitting noise. With a jumpstart to his heart, a mumble, and a grab he answers.

Hello

Groggy, sleep clinging

Why'd you never sleep with me

Pointed, direct, slightly slurred

What?

Confused

You heard me, why'd you never sleep with me. I was good for everything else

Rage tinted, tequila scented

I wanted to

4 a.m. truths

But you didn't

Accusatory

No, I didn't

Guilty

I want to know why

Telling, not asking

It's four in the morning I --

Cut off

Don't care

A sigh

You scared me

Truthful

Scared you? I'm 10 years younger than you, how the fuck did I scare you

Emphasized and shocked

You just did, and, slightly still do

Fuck off

A period

A pause

I wanted to

Laced, desire

But you didn't

Repeated

No

You're the only man who has refused to sleep with me

Proud yet hurt

Shocker

Mean, just slightly

Continued -- I've seen your taste in men

Pointed, dagger like

Your name is on that list buddy

Venomous, intentional

Buddy?

Questioning, irritated

Buddy

Satisfied

It's been four years

Wistful, confused

And?

Questioning

And it's four in the morning

Unfinished, wondering

You said that already

Eye rolling, childish

I'm aware

Blunt

Why are you call--

Don't ask

Warning, personal

A beat

A sigh

Well, I'll let you go

Uplifted, hopeful

Yeah um -- thanks for calling

Meaningful, questionable

Yeah

Bye

Prodding

Bye

Final.

author's note:

A little phone call out of context, with the sentences being transcribed like you would a stage play. I had a fun time crafting up how I wanted this conversation to go and the words I wanted to use to convey the amount of emotions swimming between the two people. Who knows why they ended, who knows the whole story, but we as readers, can get a slight glimpse through this 4am phone call.
